First of all, if you're a juvenile (under the age of 21), believe it or not, you're held to a stricter standard when it comes to DUI than adults are. If you're caught with a blood alcohol level of more than just 0.02%, you can be charged with what's known as a Baby DUI. As a result of this charge, you can get points on your license, be ordered to pay fines, and have to serve out community service. Subsequent DUI charges can result in jail time and the potential revocation of your driver's license.
Convicted DUI defendants may be ordered by the court to install what are known as ignition interlocks in their vehicles. These are devices that prevent a car from starting until an individual blows in them. If alcohol is detected in the breath, the car won't start. According to a recently passed Colorado law (effective January 2009), anyone convicted of driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.17 or above must install these devices.
If you own a commercial driver's license, the law offers you very little leeway in terms of maintaining this license if you've been convicted of a DUI or DWAI. First offenders have their CDLs suspended for one year. Second offenders lose their CDLs for life.
