Let's go over the Colorado point system for driving infractions and misdemeanors. Getting points on your license can create numerous problems, including hiked up insurance rates and the potential for the revocation of your license.
If you're convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI), you will be assessed a full 12 points. If you're convicted for DWAI (driving while impaired by alcohol), on the other hand, you're only assessed 8 points -- still significant but not as severe. A conviction of reckless driving will similarly assess 8 points against your license. If you're tagged for merely "careless driving," you're assessed 4 points.
If you fail to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic, you will be cited 4 points against your license. Speeding over the limit assessments are broken down into tiers. The lowest tier -- 5 miles to 9 miles per hour over the posted limit -- will tack on 1 point to your license. If you're convicted of driving 10 miles to 19 miles per hour over the limit, you'll get assessed 4 points. If you're 20 miles to 39 miles per hour over the speed limit, you'll be assessed 6 points. And if, somehow, you manage to break the speed limit by more than 40 miles per hour, you'll be assessed a full 12 points -- the same as you would get for a DUI. Along those lines, if you're caught drag racing or exhibiting speed and endangering the public, you'll be assessed 12 points.
Interestingly, you need not be a participant in a drag race or speed exhibition to get points against your license. If you facilitate or aid in such a demonstration, you can get tagged up to 12 points -- even if you weren't actively driving. Drivers who commit hit and run accidents or elude police officers will get 12 points assessed. If you blow through a stop light, you'll get 4 points. If you fail to stop for a school bus in Colorado, you'll be tagged for 6 points. If you pass improperly, fail to show insurance, or lack designated compulsory insurance, you'll get 4 points. If you don't have a driver's license, you'll get assessed 3 points. If you're cited a second time for driving without a legal license, you'll be cited 6 points.
